Freezers & Refrigerators
Laboratory freezers and refrigerators keep samples, reagents, standards and cultures at a stable temperature, from +2 to +8 °C for reagents down to −86 °C for long-term storage of biological samples and below. CSI Labshop supplies laboratory cold storage to research, university, food, QC and biotechnology laboratories across Malaysia.
Tell us what you store, the temperature and the volume (or number of boxes), and we will recommend a model and send a quotation.
How laboratories use freezers and refrigerators
- Reagents and standards are kept at +2 to +8 °C in a laboratory refrigerator with an even, stable temperature.
- Research samples such as DNA, RNA, enzymes and cell stocks are stored at −80 °C in an ultra-low temperature freezer.
- Food and QC labs keep retained samples and media at −20 to −40 °C.
- Very long-term storage of cells uses −150 °C class freezers from Medfrez or Haier, without handling liquid nitrogen.
Types of laboratory freezer and refrigerator
- Ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers, −86 °C, for DNA, RNA, proteins, cells and microbial stocks. Upright: Haier −86 °C ULT, Nordic U250, Nordic U100 (under-counter) and Medfrez upright. Chest: Nordic −86 °C chest and the Panasonic MDF-193-PE.
- Cryogenic freezers, −105 to −164 °C, for samples that need colder storage without liquid nitrogen. See the Haier −150 °C cryo freezer, Medfrez −105/−135/−152 °C and Medfrez −164 °C chest freezers.
- Low temperature freezers, −40 to −60 °C, for medium-term storage. See the Haier −40 °C, Nordic −45 °C and −60 °C upright freezers, Nordic −60 °C chest and Medfrez −40 °C.
- −25 °C freezers for reagents, kits and enzymes. See the Haier −25 °C freezer and Medfrez DW-YW226A chest freezer.
- Laboratory refrigerators: the Haier spark-free refrigerator for flammable solvents and reagents, and the Haier combined refrigerator and freezer.
- Special units: the Medfrez −86 °C blast freezer for fast freezing, and the Medfrez portable refrigerator/freezer (+10 to −18 °C) for field sampling and transport.
How to choose a laboratory freezer
- Temperature: −20 to −25 °C for reagents, −40 to −60 °C for medium-term storage, −80 to −86 °C for long-term biological samples.
- Upright or chest: upright freezers save floor space and make samples easy to find; chest freezers hold temperature better when opened and cost less per litre.
- Capacity: count your racks or 2-inch boxes and allow room to grow; ULT freezers run most efficiently when not overfilled with warm items.
- Room conditions: check the rated ambient temperature. Malaysian labs that are not air-conditioned 24 hours need a unit rated for hot rooms, with space around it for ventilation.
- Alarms: choose temperature and power-failure alarms, and a data logger or remote alarm for valuable samples.

Frequently asked questions
What is a ULT freezer?
An ultra-low temperature freezer holds samples at about −80 to −86 °C. It is the standard way to store DNA, RNA, proteins, cell lines and microbial stocks for years.
Can I store flammable chemicals in a normal refrigerator?
No. Sparks from a normal fridge’s lights, switches or thermostat can ignite solvent vapour. Use a spark-free or explosion-proof laboratory refrigerator instead.
How much does a −86 °C freezer cost in Malaysia?
The price depends on capacity, upright or chest design, brand and alarm options. Send us your requirements for a quotation.
