Overview

Whatman 3MM Chr is described by the manufacturer as the world's most widely used blotting paper. Its reputation rests on purity and consistency, which matters for Southern, Northern and Western transfers where uniform capillary flow and low background determine the result.

The standard 3MM Chr sheet is a medium-thickness paper (0.34 mm) and is also used extensively in electrophoresis for lifting sequencing gels. Two related grades cover heavier duties: GB003 is a 0.8 mm general-purpose blotting paper made from pure raw materials with high absorbency, used as a membrane gel support and recommended for lysis/denaturation of colony and plaque lifts and Western blots; GB005 is a 1.5 mm highly absorbent paper for applications where fewer layers must still give high capacity, such as semi-dry blotting of proteins.
