Whatman Protran Nitrocellulose Membranes
Overview
Whatman Protran membranes are made from 100% pure nitrocellulose, which the manufacturer states ensures the highest possible protein binding capacity. Membranes sold as ‘nitrocellulose’ by other suppliers may contain large amounts of cellulose acetate, which lowers binding capacity — Protran is specified for work where that difference matters.
Protran has the best handling strength of pure nitrocellulose membranes and is compatible with isotopic, chemiluminescent (luminol-based), colorimetric and fluorescent detection. Because it is nitrocellulose rather than PVDF, it does not need a methanol pre-wetting step, which makes it the membrane of choice for proteins that prefer aqueous environments.
