Whatman Westran S & Westran Clear Signal PVDF Membranes
Overview
Whatman Westran membranes are PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) transfer membranes supplied in two formats. Westran S is a 0.2 µm hydrophobic membrane designed for protein sequencing: the small pore size eliminates blow-through and increases protein binding across a wide range of molecular weights, and the chemical resistance suits the solvents used in N-terminal sequencing. Protein binding capacity is over 200 µg/cm², with high retention even after harsh wash steps.
Westran Clear Signal is the 0.45 µm version, designed for Western blotting. Both are available in popular precut sizes, which saves cutting and handling in the lab.
Choosing between them comes down to the downstream step: sequencing and low-molecular-weight work favours Westran S, routine Western blotting favours Clear Signal.
